Protect information by managing risk—not by collecting tools.

ISO/IEC 27001 defines the requirements for an information security management system: a structured way to identify information risks, choose proportionate treatment, operate controls and improve the system over time.

ConfidentialityOnly the right people can access information.
IntegrityInformation remains accurate and is not improperly altered or damaged.
AvailabilityInformation and systems are accessible when the organization and its users need them.

WHAT THE STANDARD DOES

Turn information security into a managed organizational system.

The standard takes a holistic view. Technology matters, but so do leadership, people, policies, processes, suppliers, physical environments and the way evidence is reviewed.

01 · CONTEXT

Set scope and direction

Understand the organization, interested parties and which information, processes and services belong inside the ISMS.

02 · RISK

Assess what can happen

Use a repeatable process to identify, analyze and evaluate risks to information security.

03 · TREATMENT

Choose proportionate action

Select treatment and controls that respond to the organization’s assessed risks and circumstances.

04 · IMPROVEMENT

Monitor and improve

Review performance, address nonconformities and continually improve the suitability and effectiveness of the ISMS.

ConfidentialityControl who is authorized to see or use information.
IntegrityProtect information from improper alteration, damage or loss of reliability.
AvailabilityKeep information and supporting systems accessible when legitimately required.
A MANAGEMENT-SYSTEM LOOP

Security becomes repeatable when decisions leave evidence.

The ISMS is not a single audit or software purchase. It is an operating cycle that connects leadership intent to risk decisions, controls, monitoring and improvement.

DefineSet context, scope, policy, responsibilities and objectives.
AssessIdentify information-security risks and evaluate their significance.
TreatChoose treatment, document decisions and implement appropriate controls.
ReviewMeasure performance, audit the system and conduct management review.
ImproveCorrect problems and strengthen the ISMS as risks and needs change.
MORE THAN DIGITAL DATA

Protect information in every form that matters.

The official ISO guidance includes paper-based, cloud-based and digital information. What matters is the risk to the information and the organization—not only the technology carrying it.

Financial informationRecords, statements and commercially sensitive data.
Intellectual propertyKnowledge, designs and material that create organizational value.
Employee informationPersonal and operational information entrusted to the organization.
Third-party informationCustomer, partner and supplier data held or processed on their behalf.
READINESS QUESTIONS

Can your organization explain how information risk is managed?

These questions are not a certification checklist. They reveal whether the foundations of a working ISMS are visible.

1Is the intended scope of the ISMS clear, including important services, locations, processes and dependencies?
2Are information-security risks assessed using a defined, repeatable method?
3Can the organization explain why each risk-treatment decision and control is appropriate?
4Are roles, competence, communication and documented information adequate for operating the system?
5Are objectives and performance measures connected to the organization’s actual security needs?
6Do internal audit, management review and corrective action produce evidence of improvement?
IMPLEMENTATION AND CERTIFICATION

Use the standard accurately.

Implementation creates the system.

An organization can implement ISO/IEC 27001 to gain its risk-management and operational benefits whether or not it later seeks certification.

Certification is a separate choice.

Certification is performed by an independent certification body. ISO develops the standard; it does not certify organizations. When used formally, the correct reference is ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
