Information systems · one of five concerns

The system is larger than the software.

An information system is the arrangement that lets people, information, rules and technology work together. Software is one part. Ownership, access, records and handovers decide whether the arrangement holds.

The visible application may work perfectly while the handover, source of truth or permission model quietly fails.

01 · Perspective

Perspective follows the information.

Start with the work and trace what must be known, by whom, at which point, under which authority. This reveals dependencies that a product demonstration usually leaves outside the frame.

Where would the work stop if one person, one file or one inbox disappeared?

02 · Performance

Performance is the quality of the handover.

A system performs when people can find the current information, understand its status and pass responsibility without reconstructing the story. Availability alone is not successful use.

Signal

Source

Where the information comes from and who maintains it.

Work

Access

Who may see, change, approve or recover it.

Consequence

Handover

How responsibility and context move between people and systems.

Question

Ask

Can the next owner continue without asking the previous owner to explain everything?

03 · Precision

Precision makes the system accountable.

Define the record, owner, permission, version, retention and failure route. An information system should make its boundaries inspectable, not hide them behind convenience.

Define before selecting

Define the record

What is retained as evidence of the work and its decision?

Accept before scaling

Define the failure

What happens when the source is unavailable, wrong, late or changed?

04 · Practice

Practice is the moment the system becomes dependable to someone else.

Owners maintain the service, task owners use the route, and evidence returns to the people who can improve it. Continuity is designed, then rehearsed.

Sources and notes

Read the basis, then test it in context.

These sources support the management-system and information-governance claims. The handover language is a practical lens for a particular organisation’s system.
